EVERYTHING in a dream is significant.
EVERYTHING in a dream is information for you.
Not one tiny detail in a dream should be dismissed as irrelevant, crazy, nonsense, stupid rubbish.
As children unfortunately in our society we receive messages from our parents very early on that teach us to dismiss our dreams out of hand without a second thought: “It was just a dream.” “It’s not real.” “It’s just a nightmare, there’s nothing to worry about.”
As if what takes place in OUR unconscious night after night for our entire life has nothing to do with US. Erm, what???
With an arrogance of inferred super-knowledge, we state that we know exactly what is or isn’t useful information to us about all of the different parts of our psyche, our sub-conscious, our unconscious, and the collective unconscious; wow…
Freudian and Jungian psychoanalysts spend on average 4 years doing rigorous in-depth training in the area of dream interpretation, as well as undertaking on average 5 x weekly personal therapy sessions to even begin get to grips with their own unconscious, and yet the average person claims to know emphatically what is/isn’t useful information from their own unconscious.
The breathtaking certainty with which most people dismiss their dreams or decide which ones are relevant or not is astonishing to me. As I said at the beginning: everything in every dream is relevant information to YOU. I suspect what is actually being relayed is the fear they have of actually listening to the information in their dreams. As usual, it is fear that leads people to avoid facing the truth about themselves.
This is yet another indication of our rational, logic-oriented patriarchal society that dismisses the irrational, intuitive and symbolic realms as nonsense and irrelevant. Is that the game you really want to keep playing along with though? Do you want to in fact contribute to this way of viewing the irrational and symbolic, and help perpetuate it, or do you seek another softer and more intuitive way of going through life?
How is it that you can listen to spiritual guidance, or even guidance from the horses if partaking in equine facilitated psychotherapy or learning (EFP/L) programmes, yet you won’t listen to your own psyche, who tries to get your attention night after night throughout your entire life… ? When working with horses, we view all feedback from them as information to us about ourselves. Can we try to view our unconscious in the same way – can we imagine we have a herd of horses giving us feedback each night? In EFP/L if we dismiss the horse’s feedback we’re on a slippery slope downhill away from self-improvement.
In tribal and ancient societies dreams play a major part in the individual and collective lives of the people. Shamans use dreams extensively to gather information and perform healings. The collective dream world is also more valued as a way of maintaining balance and harmony in communities.
Beginning to accept that everything you are shown when you sleep each night is useful information to you is a big step. It is hard work and requires humility to accept that all of the characters in your dreams who are sometimes unpleasant and very often the opposite of who you think you are, are in fact aspects of your personality, or even aspects of yourself that you don’t even yet know.
Men dream of women who are carefree and wild because they can’t access their inner-feminine and her wild-woman self. Women dream of Nazi men because they can’t accept they are domineering in their relationships with their husband or children.
In dreams this is the rule of thumb: Every single detail is information for you.
